Why Willpower Alone Won't Work - Love Life Sober

You may have taken a break from alcohol before, and in doing so, you tried to use all your human strength and all of your willpower not to drink. I have been there, and I did the same.

Why doesn’t willpower alone work?! And why does it mean that we go back to our old habits so quickly?

I want you to think about willpower like a battery. People like to think that the more and more you try, the more you can build up willpower like a muscle. But science has shown us that this isn’t the case. Willpower isn’t like a muscle that you can build up over time. Willpower is like a battery. You wake up with a full battery and you recharge it over night.

When you wake up in the morning, you only have so much willpower to spare. Throughout the day that runs out, so by the time you get to four or five o’clock in the afternoon if you’ve had a long day at work, you’ve been dealing with the kids, you’re exhausted and you have been using all your mental willpower in thinking about not drinking, your willpower is ZAPPED.

That’s why at the end of the day, it’s so easy to say “Screw it, I’m just going to have the glass of wine” because your willpower battery is completely depleted after a long day of resisting drinking.

My coaching is different. Together, we’re not just shutting alcohol away, not going out, not thinking about drinking, and trying to get through the day. That’s not real life. Instead we are going to look at why we feel like we need the drinks.

Together we unlearn what we think to be true about alcohol, as well as what our friends, our family, TV, movies, and social media all tell us about alcohol. Together we get curious about alcohol. Is it helping us or hurting us?

If you’ve tried willpower alone and it hasn’t worked for you- that’s because it doesn’t work. End of story.

Isn’t it time to try something that may actually stick?
