SOBRIETY & SKINCARE

One of the biggest changes in my physical appearance I saw when I quit drinking was a brighter complexion and de-puffed cheeks.

I’ve always prioritized my skincare. I get really nice facials and use good quality products recommended by specialists that I trust. But these pricey serums and medical facials didn’t hold a candle to the change I saw in my skin when I quit drinking wine every night.

Here’s why….

When I had had three or four glasses of wine a night I would frequently forget to do my night time routine. Who here among us hasn’t passed out in full make-up and eyelashes after a night out? Going to bed with a greasy, unclean face is not the answer ladies.

But there’s more to it then just falling asleep in your make-up. Alcohol dehydrates you and this causes pores and wrinkles to be more visible. This is because alcohol decreases the body’s production of an antidiuretic hormone which helps the body to reabsorb water.

The dehydration issue is also what’s making your face more puffy when you drink because the body is trying to cling on to the little water it has left. Our skin and vital organs try to hold onto as much water as possible, leading to puffiness in the face.

If you suffer from rosacea the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that drinking liquor and wine can increase this skin problem. Alcohol causes small blood vessels in the skin to widen – hence all the broke capillaries on your face.

When you stop drinking, these conditions stop. I have noticed the redness almost completely gone from my face. The only thing I have to combat with now is the sun damage from all that tanning in in my teens.

Have you noticed a change in your skin when you’ve taken a break from alcohol?

If you’re ready for clear, de-puffed skin, the first step is a 30 day break from alcohol. You can take my self-study at-home 30 Day Booze Break course here.
