I would start thinking about the wine on my way to school pick-up at 4 PM. Maybe it was one of those days that I had sworn off it when I woke up, or maybe it was one of those days that I had already admitted defeat. Regardless, it was always on my walk to school that I started thinking about opening up that bottle.

Just thinking about it at the school gates made me already feel relaxed; I had reached the end of the day. Then, finally, after an hour or so of supervising homework, I could wave the white flag and pour the glass. It was the ultimate treat. It was the ultimate reward for being a mom. I felt that I deserved those glasses of wine for all of my hard work. I believed it was helping me get through the evenings. I wanted that instant relief, that moment where it feels like your shoulders come down from your ears, and you can just... breathe.

But then, one day, I realised the wine had started to take more than it was giving. I was always exhausted and felt like I was walking around in a fog. I snapped at my kids all the time. I constantly missed my workouts and was eating junk to curb the hangovers. I decided to stop drinking for a bit and see if that made a difference.. 

That's when everything changed.

I began to challenge my assumptions about alcohol. Was it helping me de-stress when I was stressed out? Was it helping me connect with my husband? Could I have any fun without it? Would it be possible to go on holiday without rosé?. 

And then something incredible happened, I lost the desire to drink.

WENDY McCALLUM, LLB, is a Burnout and Alcohol Coach, Wellness Expert and the host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast.

Wendy teaches women (who are nearing burnout and often using alcohol to cope) how to reclaim time for themselves, reduce stress, build healthier habits, and increase their daily joy.

No stranger to burnout, Wendy spent 12+ years working as a lawyer, then partner, in Calgary. As a busy litigator and mom of two young children, she struggled to find her “work-life” balance. In 2008, she left law to create a life she didn’t need to escape from.

DAY 4

"What do I tell my friends?"

In this lesson, we'll look at how to handle friends & family who give you a hard time about not drinking.

  • This isn't about you, it's about them. You are holding up a mirror to their drinking.
  • How to plan a night out so you don't feel uncomfortable when you order a mocktail.
  • What to say when your friends question your decision.
DAY 5

How to Handle Cravings

In this lesson, you’ll learn expert coaching tactics to get you through that 5 o'clock witching hour.

  • Learn what your body is really asking for instead of wine.
  • Learn how to recognise triggers, and change the drinking habit.
  • Play the tape forward. What does the next morning really look like if you have that drink?
Day 7

Why Willpower Alone Doesn't Work

In this module, you’ll learn why it's been so hard in the past to stick to a break from alcohol.

  • Willpower is like a dying battery. By the end of the day, you have none.
  • Instead we will dive deep on how you can lose the desire to drink.
  • Losing the desire to drink means no more "should I/shouldn't I" battles. This is the key to freedom!
Day 14

Does Moderation Work?

In this lesson, you’ll learn why moderation is so darn tricky!

  • Why some of your friends can moderate, but you can't seem to make it work.
  • How it feels to be able to take it or leave it.
  • Three reasons the substance of alcohol makes moderation difficult, including the science behind dopamine.
Day 20

What happens if I slip-up?

In this module, we are going to reframe this journey. This is not about perfection, it's about progress.

  • In this lesson we talk about how "slip-ups" can be used help us along the way. We call these "data points."
  • When we have a drink, what can we learn about how you felt afterwards? How was your sleep? Did you have hangxiety after?
  • Strategically planned data points can help us learn how alcohol is really holding us back.
